Арбанаси

Арбанаси is the least “village” feeling village in our collection, and we say that as a recommendation. It sits on a plateau five kilometres above Велико Търново — close enough that you can be in a real city centre in fifteen minutes, far enough that the air, the architecture, and the rhythm are unambiguously rural.

The settlement is unusual: founded in the 15th century by Christian Albanians and Greeks who fled south, it has a much older fabric than most BG villages — 17th-century stone houses with thick walls, low doors, and small windows that were originally defensive. Five medieval churches, each with intact frescoes.

What we love: the practical reality is unusually friendly. Buses are hourly. Internet is properly good. The hospital is close. Cafés are open in February. If you want a village pace without sacrificing access to medical care, schools, and a city, this is probably the easiest of our villages to actually move to.

What’s hard: it doesn’t feel like the deep-rural fantasy. If your image of village life involves driving forty minutes to anything, this is too tame. The Veliko Tarnovo proximity also means property prices have risen — expect €60K minimum for something modest, €150K+ for a restored historic house. Heavily touristed by day in summer.
